Meaning and feelings of colours....

I find this topic quite interesting and I thought I would share just a little of colour meanings with you....

There are positives and negatives for all colours, which you need to be aware of before surrounding yourself in a particular colour or tone...

Red: (physical) positives: strength, warmth, energy and excitement

                               negatives: aggression, defiance and strain

Blue: (intellectual) positives: intuition, trust, reflection and calm

                                       negatives: unfriendliness, aloofness and coldness

Yellow: (emotional) positives: optimism, confidence and creativity

                                        negatives: fear, irrationality and critisism

Green: (balance) positives: harmony, balance and restoration

                                  negatives: boredom, blandness and stagnation

We all need to look at how we are looking after our skin when the weather is at its harshest.....even oily skins....

Many clients with an oily skin type feel that they shouldn't be using a moisturiser as this will increase their oil flow. This is NOT the case. An oily skin is just as prone to DEHYDRATION as any other skin, and not supplying it with essential moisture will only add hydration issues to an already volatile skin concern. Now as winter has truly arrived, there is nothing like a warm yummy gooey lunch, or Sunday evening toastie (like at our house) and this really appealed to me...love prosciutto, love pesto, love cheese...cant go wrong really ;) ..... I thought this was a great idea, so now I am sharing :)

Now, I know that most of us are guilty of NOT throwing out our mascara even though it is well and truly time for it.....(and it really IS really bad for your eye health) so here are a few tips to use your 'old, finished with' mascara wand.  Firstly, you will need to leave it in warm water for 10-15 mins, then get some shampoo and work the wand with your fingers through until it is well soaked, rinse with cold water until the water runs clear and air dry. Done!

1. Use as an eyebrow brush...I have been doing this for years...it works really really well to tame and tidy those brow hairs that just DONT want to do what you want with them!

2. Remove clumps of mascara from your lashes if you have been too heavy handed with the NEW mascara

3. Gets dirt and fluff from delicate jewellery and beaded bags/clothing...cleans those hard to get to spots

4. Cleans around and at the end of your taps in the laundry/kitchen/bathroom. Great size to reach around the base and inside the tip of the spout too.

5. And unclogs the grimy bits from sinks. Hair etc in the bathroom sink...now gone!

I know that it can be very confusing when you are looking at a skincare routine what is going to be right for YOU? What skincare will be beneficial and what products are going to work? What should I invest in? It seems like a minefield......Here is a quick guide as to what is available and what should be considered....

Some people make the mistake of thinking that if you have a regular appointment with your therapist that that is ALL you need to do to keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant...Unfortunately, we can only do SO much.  You REALLY need to look at how you are looking after your skin when you are at home everyday to ensure that EVERY day you are nurturing and protecting your skin.

This does NOT mean that you need every single product on the market it just means that you need to consider what is essential and then what is something worth saving up for....

ESSENTIALS:

Cleanser: ALWAYS use a cleanser morning AND night and invest in  GOOD ONE! Never, ever go to bed with makeup on as the products sitting on your skin is a great way to get breakouts!

Exfoliant: Using an exfoliant twice a week (unless it is designed for daily use such as Dermalogica Microfoliant) is an absolute MUST to keep skin healthy as well as removing dead skin cells AND allowing your moisturiser to be absorbed properly!

Moisturiser:  A moisturiser day and night will keep skin hydrated and moist. Even oily and congested skins need a suitable moisturiser as this skin type will STILL become dehydrated and flaky!

Eye cream:  With Australia's sun soooo strong, it is recommended that a suitable eyecream to protect the delicate eye area is used from the age of 16! It IS a necessity from 21-25 onward to ensure you keep those fine lines and crows feet away as long as possible!!

Sunscreen: This is of course an ABSOLUTE necessity every single day, not JUST when you go to the beach! Invest in a great suncreen and make sure that your makeup/foundation has an added SPF for that EXTRA boost too!

SAVE UP FOR;

There are many products on the market that are JUST amazing for particular concerns and added bonuses. Toners, that are now NOT made from alcohol (and definitely in this day and age should NOT be) will not only spritz your skin to keep it hydrated, which in air conditioning or a frequent traveller is GREAT IDEA, it also allows your moisturiser to last longer. I use mine everyday as I have dryer skin and it really helps to keep that 'tight' feeling away!

Eye makeup remover is another fabulous product that will protect the delicate eye area and ensure that your makeup is removed gently and without dragging or pulling. They are soothing and designed to stop that scary panda eyes look that we want to avoid :)

Serums and boosters are AMAZING to infuse the skin with antioxidants, peptides, antiaging properties and to assist with pollution and free radical damage. They are great as you can use them WHEN your skin needs it. This can be used as alternative to a 'day' and 'night' moisturiser too...buy a fabulous moisturiser and just ADD the serum or booster at night when you need to!

Masks are really great to use at home to give your skin an added lift, particularly if you are about to go out or for a special occasion. The type of masks on the market is limitless and suited to every skin type and condition. Make sure you buy one from an experienced therapist who has given you suitable advise.

Make sure you ask us if you are unsure about the products that you are using and if there is a better option to your current routine.  It does NOT have to cost a fortune, but it is wise to ensure that what you DO purchase will work for YOU! Adult Acne-Why is it on the rise???

After reading an article yesterday from the International Dermal Institute (the study centre with Dermalogica) I had to agree with this consensus. This is definitely a growing issue in our salon, as in most around the country/world. What are we doing to ourselves as adults to cause an onset of Adult based acne?? Clinical studies indicate that between 40-55% of the adult population aged between 20-40 are diagnosed with low grade persistent acne and oily skin.

It is more likely to be seen as inflammatory, with lesions predominantly around the mouth, jawline and chin. Likewise, adults are more likely to have sensitive/sensitised skins with a combination of other concerns making treatment increasingly challenging than the treatment of teens with generally more resilient, uniform and oilier skins.

Why is it on the rise???....well, no surprise that the primary aggravating factor for Adult Onset Acne is chronic STRESS! Acute stress equates to the occasional breakout and pustule....however, prolonged chronic stress leads to an increase in hormonal levels which increases oil production and viola!!! Adult Onset Acne can occur!

Of course, female Adult Onset Acne has dramatically increased with the added responsibilities that come with our lifestyles. The pressures of family and work, maintaining some sort of work/life balance, running a household, keeping a steady family income...THEN we add scary cosmetics and skincare that have known skin irritants and add to that monthly hormone fluctuations and we have the perfect breeding ground.

So, what can we do....well, of course, taking a little time out each day/week will help with general sanity and booking in a monthly massage or facial will help with relaxation and assisting with skin conditions....and there are some fabulous products on the market that will help you.

Solarium Ban-why do we need this?

No tan is worth dying for....and it isn't.              

 From December 2014 the NSW banned use of all solariums and sunbeds and it is about time too! 

(79% of all surveyed by the Cancer Council support this ban)

Research shows there is a 59% more likelihood of melanomas for solarium users under 35.

There is no such thing as a safe solarium tan. UV radiation from solariums can increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Solariums can also cause eye damage and immediate skin damage, such as sunburn, irritation, redness and swelling. A solarium tan does not provide your skin with sun protection, so your skin is still prone to damage when outdoors exposed to the sun’s natural UV radiation.

Public education campaigns about the dangers of UV radiation from the sun have resulted in large changes in the awareness and knowledge of the risks of skin cancer and over exposure to the sun's UV rays.

In 2008, 43 deaths, 281 melanomas, 2572 squamous cell carcinomas have been attributed to solarium use, each year in Australia. No tan is worth dying for!!

How to apply the perfect lipstick/gloss....

Perfect lips, like everything else, require the perfect base to work with. Exfoliating your lips is just as important as the rest of your face, (and body too) and we are all familiar with cracked, dry lips.

Moisturising is also very important, and a great lip product (such as Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Firm or Renewal lip complex) will do the trick nicely....and no, Vaseline will NOT do the trick. It is the leftover residue from the refinery of crude oil. It gives the FALSE feeling of hydration when in fact it has no nurturing or hydrating benefits at all, and it can build up on the skin with regular use, attracting bacteria and irritation. Grab a tube of paw paw ointment instead!

Next step...always cover the lips with your foundation and then powder over the top for an even, dry surface.

Lipliner...do NOT underestimate the value of a great neutral liner. You can use alone for a fab matte result, or as a base for longer lasting colour. GloMinerals have a great range of mineral lipliners with awesome colours to choose from.

Line the lip in the centre bow as a 'v' shape first. Then draw a line in the centre of the lower lip. Then you just join the dots ;) Top of v down to corner on top of lips and up from each side of centre line. If you have larger lips draw the lines slightly inside the lip and smaller lips slightly outside. 

Colour with lipstick of choice, and you will ALWAYS get a better result with a lip brush than trying to use the actual lipstick. Going out? Apply, blot, reapply, blot, powder then reapply a 3rd time and your colour will last all night. 

Want the wet look? Now we all love the shine of a gloss, but the colour just won't last.
